Busted: 9 Biggest Myths about In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) by Best IVF Doctors in Delhi
In Vitro Fertilisation (commonly known as IVF) is a powerful treatment that helps so many couples around the world achieve their dream of becoming parents. However, there are many assumptions about IVF that are simply not true. Mr Vivek Kohli, Director – of Baby Joy Fertility & IVF Centre is going to tackle a few of the myths about the procedure.
1. The myth: Only rich people can afford IVF.
The truth: Although IVF is expensive, the cost of the procedure has not increased over the last couple of years and can be affordable for different types of people all over the world. In fact, IVF is much more affordable as compared to many other advanced therapies. Good centres that achieve a critical mass of IVF cycles offer the treatment at relatively lower costs.
2. The myth: IVF is always the last choice.
The truth: People assume that those who have IVF have tried everything else to have a baby but that is not always the case. In cases where the couple is older or the woman has blockages in her pipes, or there is a significant semen problem in the male, IVF is actually the FIRST option because nothing else will work.
3. The myth: IVF is the only way you can solve all your fertility issues.
The truth: There are other methods of treating infertility like IUI, hormonal, surgical, etc, depending upon the medical condition. Thus, In Vitro Fertilisation is not your only option.
4. The myth: IVF is always successful.
The truth: Unfortunately this is not always the case, IVF works about 40% of the time. There are a number of factors that determine if the procedure is going to work for you. An important factor is a centre where you are getting the procedure done because different centres have different success rates, ranging from 10%-50%. However, multiple attempts increase the chances of success.
5. The myth: Only younger people can have IVF.
The truth: Older women and even those who have reached menopause can also have IVF using donor eggs and this is actually really popular & successful.
6. The myth: You have to stay in hospital for the IVF procedure.
The truth: No overnight stay is required for IVF. The egg collection stage of IVF requires day admission of a couple of hours at the hospital. The actual procedure is pretty straightforward forward and you will be in and out of the clinic really quickly.
7. The myth: IVF always results in multiple babies.
The truth: The odds of twins or triplets is increased with IVF if multiple embryos are transferred. However, this can be controlled by limiting the number of embryos transferred.
8. The myth: There is an increased number of deformities in babies made from IVF.
The truth: There is no greater chance of malformation from IVF compared to naturally conceived pregnancies.
